Safe Ground

[A dorky poem by yours truly.]

As long as we continue to pedal
through the same ideas and concepts
     every Sunday
As long as "they" are always wrong
   and "we" are always right
Then we are on safe ground.

Some days we seem to veer near the edge.
We come close to an interesting or new idea.
We consider that there might be more to consider.
And then we get back on task.

If we really believe what we believe
Then aren't we already on safe ground?
Shouldn't we feel safe then,
   pedaling outside our comfort zone?

*Sigh*

Another Sunday spent
   remaining on safe ground.

Old ways are secure and comfortable. The more turbulent life is outside of Sundays the more secure people want to be on Sundays. Change is very hard for most people and almost impossible for some.

  2. that's true. and yet sundays should be the safest time for us to step outside our comfort zone and see bigger pictures. the fact that it's not makes me wonder how greatly the world affects us where it should be affecting us least.

  3. Exactly!! That's a big theme in the books I'm reading: Sabbath by Allender and Dual Citizens (Worship and Life between the Already and the Not Yet) by Jason Stellman. Sundays should be a place for us to exercise the change that's needed, but it's not going to happen unless people's views change and unless they understand/believe what Sundays do. Also, one to two hours isn't really enough time to help people practice what we hear and learn; it's barely enough time to move past the superficial and safe.

  4. this was also the theme in ... i think it was clapp's book, a peculiar people. (if it wasn't there, then it was Hauerwas's book.) the idea was that the church is our safe place to test out all these difficult ideas such as forgiveness, love, kindness, etc. it's a safe place to try (and possibly mess up) so that when we go out in the world, we'll be better at doing these things that we're called to do. and then the verse that they'll know we're his disciples because of our love for one another comes into play. as we grow better at loving, people will take notice.
