"I think it is safe to say that while the South is hardly Christ-centered, it is most certainly Christ-haunted." -- Flannery O'Connor, in her article The Catholic Novelist in the Protestant South
(Just saw this quote in a Tom Cannon post and thought it was so well said that it needed to be reposted.)
O'Connor was a very interesting woman. Unfortunately I've read more about than I've read of her work, which is kind of silly since I have her complete works on my bookshelves. It is one of those reading projects I keep intending to get around to.
ReplyDeleteI've thought that since we moved here 13 years ago.
ReplyDeletei have a writer friend who is a BIG fan of O'Conner. she was constantly quoting her or reading from her short stories. the only Flannery O'Conner i know probably came straight out of Zoe's mouth or was handed to me in paper form from Zoe's hand.
ReplyDeleteand i know she has a lot of really deep and interesting things to say.
but she seems to have so much death hanging around her stories, that i just couldn't get into them.
I agree. From the few I've read I find I get entranced by her literary expertise but the story content tends to leave me feeling unsettled, which is what I think her aim was.
